The LGBT community of greater Kansas City (and surrounding areas) has shown its overwhelming support for the establishment of a group that organizes and supports LGBT families and family building.  That group is Midwest Alternative Families Alliance, Inc.  LGBT families, those building families, and straight allies and supporters enthusiastically attended MAFA activities in 2006.  Picnics, educational seminars, adult dinners, and children’s activities brought old friends and new friends together. 

As with all successful organizations, managing such a large group requires planning and structure.  MAFA has a great Board of Directors made up of representatives from the greater Kansas City community and from MAFA families.  The Board has concluded that to keep the organization in working order, funding and underwriting is necessary to offset various costs, such as web site, partial cost of activities, maintaining a post office box, maintaining our 501C3 status, supplies, etc.  In order to maintain the strength of MAFA and to not over-burden a few, it makes sense to the Board to have the membership share in underwriting and financially supporting the group. 

Therefore, MAFA has begun collecting dues to be paid annually in the amount of $25 per family. 

As always, dues and donations are tax deductible and you will be issued a receipt for tax purposes.  Donations beyond the $25 annual dues are always appreciated. 

The United Way allows individuals to designate MAFA as recipient of your donation.  Ask your Human Resources Department for assistance in making this designation. 

If the request for dues creates a hardship for your family, please contact a Board member at Contact@kcmafa.org to arrange for a donation of time instead.
